Regional Consultation on Social Determinants of Health 18-20 February 2009, Colombo, Sri Lanka

NHCO / Story of the Month  / Regional Consultation on Social Determinants of Health 18-20 February 2009, Colombo, Sri Lanka

Mrs. Kannikar Bunteongjit, Deputy Secretary-General of the National Health Commission, and the Thai representatives attended the Regional Consultation on Social Determinants of Health (SDH) during 18-20 February 2009 organized by the Ministry of Health and Nutrition of Sri Lanka in Colombo.

The meeting addressed the important roles of SDH on the improvement of daily living conditions, the tackle of unequal distribution of power, money and resources, and the routine monitoring of health inequity. Mrs. Buntoengjit represented Dr.Amphon Jindawatthana, Secretary-General of the National Health Commission, to give a presentation on ‘Actions to Improve Daily Living Conditions: Thailand’s Experience on Development of Healthy Public Policies and Program’, focusing on the First Thailand National Health Assembly (NHA) 2008 as an important participatory forum towards the development of healthy public policies in the country (please see our publications).

‘The Triangle and Moves the Mountain Approach’ linking together the three powers – political power, social power, and wisdom power – was acknowledged as a critical strategy for the movement towards well-being. The other two resource persons from Thailand – Dr. Viroj Tangcharoensathien (Director of the International Health Policy Program, Ministry of Public Health) and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Suphot Dendoung (Mahidol University) also shared their views on ‘SDH in Thailand and South-East Asian Region (SEAR)’ and ‘Globalization and Health’ in the meeting, respectively.
